How are hearing aids used for tinnitus masking?

Tinnitus What is it

Client:

"I hear a ringing or buzzing sound. What is that?"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"The sound you are describing is likely Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the medical term for the perception of noise in your ears or head when there is no external sound present. While many people describe it as a "ringing" or "buzzing," it can actually present as many different sounds, such as hissing, whistling, clicking, or even roaring. It is important to remember that tinnitus is a symptom that varies from person to person, rather than a condition itself.

A hearing test will show us exactly what is going on with your hearing and if the sound is related to hearing loss.

If you want to see if it is related to hearing loss, please call to book an appointment for a hearing test at one of my Hearing Clinics in Vancouver or North Vancouver."

Tinnitus Causes

Client:

"How do I know if hearing loss is causing my tinnitus?"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"While the exact cause of tinnitus remains unknown, a complete hearing test helps me see if it is related to your hearing levels. In some cases, tinnitus is a sign of hearing loss, though for some people, something as simple as earwax removal might make a difference.

If your hearing test results show that you have hearing loss, it might be the reason for your tinnitus, and treating the hearing loss may help you manage it. This is because when your brain isn’t receiving enough external sound, it may create its own noise to compensate. Additionally, when there is less background sound to naturally cover the ringing, it often becomes more noticeable.

That is why a complete hearing test is a helpful first step to see if your tinnitus might be a symptom of hearing loss.

If you are noticing signs of tinnitus, please call to schedule an appointment at one of my Hearing Clinics in Vancouver or North Vancouver."

Tinnitus Types

Client:

"What is the difference between subjective and objective tinnitus?"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"That is a great question! Those two are two main categories of tinnitus based on who can hear the sound.

Subjective Tinnitus is the most common type and is a sound that only you can hear. Objective Tinnitus is very rare and is a sound that I can also hear during your hearing test. Aside from these main categories, there are other variations such as Somatic, Pulsatile, Sensory, and Musical Tinnitus.

If you want to see if it is related to hearing loss, please call to book an appointment for a hearing test at one of my Hearing Clinics in Vancouver or North Vancouver."

Tinnitus Levels

Client:

"Can my tinnitus get worse if it is currently mild or moderate?"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"In general, there are three levels of tinnitus: Mild, Moderate, and Severe.

A Mild level might only be heard in a quiet environment, while a Severe level can be constant and very distracting. In some cases, with hearing loss, tinnitus might become more noticeable and harder to ignore over time. That is why treating your hearing loss might help in managing your tinnitus and preventing it from becoming more intrusive.

Tinnitus Diagnosis

Client:

"What can a hearing test tell me about my tinnitus"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"A complete hearing test allows me to diagnose your hearing loss level or determine if there is a physical issue blockaging your hearing. Since tinnitus itself cannot be measured directly, we use the test to find the underlying cause.

If the test shows that you have hearing loss, I will typically prescribe hearing aids in some cases. By improving your ability to hear external sounds, your brain no longer needs to focus as much on internal noise. When you can hear the world around you better, it often makes the tinnitus much less noticeable and easier to ignore.

A professional hearing test is the first step in determining if your tinnitus is related to your hearing and if hearing aids are the right solution for you.

If you are ready for a hearing test, please call to schedule an appointment at one of my Hearing Clinics in Vancouver or North Vancouver."

Tinnitus Treatment

Client:

"How are hearing aids used for tinnitus masking?"

Dr. Reza Ataee:

"Currently, there is no direct treatment for tinnitus because the exact causes are still not fully known.

In many cases involving hearing loss, when I prescribe hearing aids, the ringing becomes much easier to ignore by bringing back everyday sounds. When your brain receives more normal, external sound, it naturally focuses less on the internal ringing.

Additionally, modern hearing aids have a specific tinnitus masking feature if needed. This technology can generate soft, soothing sounds that provide extra relief for those who find their tinnitus particularly intrusive.

If you would like to explore more hearing aid features, please call to schedule an appointment at one of my Hearing Clinics in Vancouver or North Vancouver."
